What really drives this game is the progression system. However, there is just so much to do in this game that it is not an exaggeration to say that you will get a couple of hundred hours of gameplay out of this. This is a turn-based strategy RPG and with that, it offers what you would expect. If you look at screenshots or videos of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, you will think that you have this game pegged right away. These impressive looks are backed up with a solid soundtrack and some great Japanese voice acting which I liked as it helped give the characters more personality.
I really do feel that in terms of the visuals this is a great looking game. The game also has some great storytelling cut scenes with some amazing video sequences and the dialogue is done with large character portraits. Locations have lots of details and high structures, walls and in general just a ton of personality.
Many games like this will go for a “flatter” style when it comes to the environments, but that is not the case here. This is a top down/isometric kind of game and it has some of the most amazing looking locations I have seen. It has an almost Saturday morning cartoon vibe to the visuals. Even now, many years later this is a game that looks fantastic. Visually, Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten is a tremendous looking game.
